Iran Focus: The Regime announced the death of Alborz Ghassemi, a political prisoner and sympathizer of the opposition movement, (OMPI) seven months after his death in prison after denying him medical care.

The press agency Irna cited a source who indicated that Alborz, who was believed to be connected with OMPI, died last February in hospital due to cancer.

The source stated Wednesday that Alborz and his brother Hamid were arrested by the Army Security and Information Organization accusing both of collaboration with OMPI. The same source added that during an initial ruling the tribunal condemned Alborz to capital punishment, later reducing the sentence to life imprisonment.

Captain Alborz, 51 years of age, died January 19, 2010 after surviving 20 months in prison and being tortured. He suffered from chronic pains due to stomach cancer and died at the Evan prison in Teheran. He was deprived of hospitalization and appropriate medical care. Alborz was a seasoned commander for the centre specializing in Naval Instruction in the City of Racht and also instructed the Marines' school.

Alborz was arrested May 12, 2008 and accused of providing OMPI with information. His brother Hamid, a Canadian resident, was also arrested on his return to Iran. The two political prisoners were condemned to death after being accused of waging war against God. An appeal later reduced their sentence to life imprisonment.

The torturers refused Alborz medical treatment despite his unbearable pain from the cancer, the torture he was subjected to and the atrocious conditions of his isolation cell.

Hamid his brother imprisoned for 27 months now, is also tortured and is in isolation. He is housed in section 350 of Evin prison under deplorable conditions.

There are actually a large number of political prisoners in Iran that are suffering chronic illnesses and are being denied medical care. The Regime tells the prisoners that they aren’t going to save them but rather will ensure they die a painful death.
